Alan Kulwicki won NASCAR's Winston Cup in 1992. Kulwicki clinched his title during the Hooters 500 Race. The race was notably the last ever NASCAR race ran by Richard Petty, and Jeff Gordon's first ever heat. The final race of the event was down to Alan Kulwicki and Bill Elliot after a crash between the point leader Allison and Ernie Irvan. Kulwicki maintained a conservative fuel regimen after his last pit stop and, though he lost the race to Bill Elliot, he maintained a 10 point lead in the Cup to take the championship title. Kulwicki to celebrate ran a backwards polish lap in his 'Underbird' car. Tragically Alan Kulwicki died in an airplane crash shortly after he clinched his title in April of 1993.
