STS-32 was the 33rd mission conducted by NASA's space shuttle program and it was the ninth launch of the shuttle Columbia. The mission had the honor of being the first to use Launch Pad A at the Kennedy's Space Center's complex 39 since 1986, and it departed in January of 1990. Lasting nearly 11 days, it was the longest shuttle mission to date.

The mission featured a five man crew consisting of Daniel C. Brandenstein, James D Wetherbee, Bonnie J. Dunbar, Marsha S. Ivins, and G. David Low. The mission's primary directives were to deploy the Syncom IV-F5 defense communications satellite and to also retrieve NASA's Long Duration Exposure Facility.
