The Grateful Dead are known for their eclectic, psychedelic rock style and their energetic concerts that would last for hours as the band members improvised together. The Dead are also known for their dedicated fan base, lovingly called Deadheads, who would follow the band's tours around the country because every show was guaranteed to be different than the one before. Some of their most popular songs include, "Scarlet Begonias," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Ripple."

The band was founded in California amidst the counterculture of the 60s. Because of this, the band is heavily influenced by psychedelic, world music and in turn, the Grateful Dead heavily influenced counterculture going forward. The founding members of the band were Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann. Mickey Hart joined the band in the late 60s and Vince Welnick joined in 1990 after the former keyboardist died. Although the band didn't release any studio albums in the 90s, they debuted new songs at live shows including, "So Many Roads" and "Corinna." The Grateful Dead disbanded in 1995 after Garcia's death.

The Grateful Dead's legacy runs deep. The band was ranked #57 on Rolling Stones' list of Greatest Artists of All Time, they've been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and they've received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Surviving members of the band still occasionally play live shows as Dead & Company. The Deadhead community is still active and they keep the band alive through a dedication to their music and message.
