Home Improvement was one of the most watched sitcoms of the 1990s. It centered around the daily lives of Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor, the host of a home improvement television show within the show, and his wife and three sons portrayed by Patricia Richardson, Zachery Ty Bryan, Johnathan Taylor Thomas, and Tarah Noah Smith. The show first aired on ABC in 1991, and during its second season it managed to make it to No. 2 in the ratings. This was the same year that Allen starred in the number one film in the country The Santa Clause. The series is what launched the acting career of Allen, who went on to also star in Toy Story, Galaxy Quest, and the sitcom Last Man Standing. The series also helped to launch the television career of Pamela Anderson and it helped to boost Johnathan Taylor Thomas to teen idol status.

Throughout the series Allen's character is shown wearing a myriad of merchandise from Michigan-based colleges. Allen considers Michigan his home state, and he made a point of only wearing Michigan school merch on the show. The universities would send the clothing in for Allen to wear on the show.
