This awesome concert tee commemorates the 1993 MTV Alternative Nation Tour that featured the bands Spin Doctors, Soul Asylum, and Screaming Trees. All three bands were alt rock acts who pulled influences from grunge, funk, and punk rock. Opening act Screaming Trees was a product of the Seattle, Washington grunge scene and they had released the album Sweet Oblivion the previous year. Soul Asylum had released the album Grave Dancers Union the previous year and had played at the 1993 inauguration of President Clinton in January. The headliners, Spin Doctors, formed in the late 80s and was influenced by bands like Phish and the jam band scene. Their debut album Pocket Full of Kryptonite received little fanfare when it released in 1991 but gained popularity in the summer of 1992 when MTV began playing some of the tracks. Spin Doctors appeared on Saturday Night Live, Sesame Street, and were featured on the cover of Rolling Stone's January 1993 issue.
The MTV Alternative Nation Tour traveled around the US during the summer of 1993, and while Spin Doctors were the headliner, it was almost universally agreed by critics that Soul Asylum stole the show and carried the tour. Soul Asylum would later go on to win the 1994 Grammy for Best Rock Song for "Runaway Train." Spin Doctors were able to draw a positive response from the tour's young crowd however, by playing popular MTV hits like "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong."
