The series premiered with a 72-minute long pilot movie before it was turned into television show that aired on ABC. The two titular characters were a pair of southern California police detectives, and they were based on real-life NYPD detectives Lou Telano and John Sepe. Starsky was played by Paul Michael Glaser, who later gained notoriety playing Captain Jack Steeper on Third Watch. Meanwhile Richard "Hutch" Hutchinson was portrayed by David Soul.
