The Marlins entered into the 1997 World Series as underdogs, as the team was still fairly fresh, having only joined the MLB back in 1993. This was their first winning season, and it earned them the wild card berth in the National League. Their success made the Marlins the first ever team to reach a World Series in only five years of play, and they also became the first ever Wild Card team to win the Series.
