When Married...with Children first premiered on Fox back in 1987, the show set itself apart by portraying the antithesis of the stereotypical American sitcom family. The Bundys were celebrated for their crass and uncouth behavior. In addition to Al and Peggy, the show also featured their dim-witted daughter Kelly portrayed by Christina Applegate, their smart-alek son Bud played by David Faustino, and their comically uptight neighbor Marcy played by Amanda Bearse, who later began directing episodes of the show in the early 90s. Fans will remember the show's theme song "Love and Marriage" sung by Frank Sinatra, and how its lyrics perfectly contrasted the sitcom's hilariously dysfunctional family.

Married...with Children lasted an impressive eleven seasons, and during its time on air, it became notable as one of the first raunchy sitcoms to run on network television. The show's adult jokes lead to demands from anti-obscenity activist, Terry Rakolta to cancel the series, but Rakolta's campaign against the sitcom only boosted public interest. While Al Bundy may have been a proud misogynist onscreen, the show itself was applauded for not only welcoming Bearse into the director's chair, but also supporting her as she became one of the first actresses to publicly come out as a lesbian in Hollywood.
