This amazing vintage tee was made to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the cult classic film the Rocky Horror Picture Show. This iconic 1975 film left a lasting mark on pop culture and essentially redefined the midnight movie experience. The movie was based off a stage show written by Richard O'Brien, and it starred O'Brien alongside Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, and Tim Curry as the infamous Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
When the film first premiered it was almost universally panned by critics, but around a year later, the movie started to be screened as a midnight movie at a handful of small theaters. One of these was the Waverly Theater in Greenwich Village, an area known for its thriving LGBTQ community. Members of this community resonated strongly with the film's themes of sexual liberation and androgyny, and over time midnight screenings of Rocky Horror started to become a national phenomenon. As the movie's cult following grew, screenings became more elaborate and interactive with theater-goers dressing up in costume, talking back to the screen, and bringing props to act out scenes. Eventually, a San Francisco theater became the first to feature a performance group acting out nearly the entire film, and this quickly became standard practice.
This shirt celebrates 15 years of Rocky Horror's legacy, but the movie has continued to delight audiences for many decades. To this day, shadow casts perform alongside the film in a variety of theaters, and there are even annual Rocky Horror conventions held around the country.
