This incredible tee features Darth Maul, the sinister antagonist of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. After the success of the original Star Wars trilogy, there were talks of a follow-up, but George Lucas didn't have much interest in returning to the franchise until he began exploring the backstory of Anakin Skywalker, the young Jedi who eventually grows up to become Darth Vader. The Phantom Menace became the first of Lucas' prequel trilogy, which told the tragic story of how Anakin was lured to the dark side.

The prequels introduced a variety of new characters, and Darth Maul quickly became a favorite among fans. Although he had a limited amount of screen time, audiences were drawn to his stylish and striking design, which was initially conceived by concept artist Iain McCaig. When it came time to create the movie's primary villain, Lucas told McCaig "give me your worst nightmare", however he amended his request after seeing McCaig's first crack at the character. Reportedly Lucas took one look at Maul's original design and promptly told McCaig, "give me your second worst nightmare".
