Despite receiving  mixed reviews from critics, The Fast and the Furious wound up giving birth to one of the most iconic and highest-grossing action movie franchises of all time. The original film was based off an article in Vibe magazine titled, "Racer X", and the story centered on an undercover cop who becomes embroiled in the world of illegal street racing. The movie starred Paul Walker in what was considered the breakthrough role of his career, and also featured Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, and Rick Yune.

While The Fast and the Furious did rank number one at the box office during its opening weekend, few could have predicted the movie growing into the major franchise that it did. It was followed by numerous sequels that continued to focus on street racing, before the series began to veer more into the territory of heists and espionage. The franchise is also credited with helping to promote onscreen diversity in Hollywood, as it proved that you didn't need an all white cast to make a hit franchise.
