This awesome vintage ringer features a graphic of the lovable puppet Howdy Doody, who was the star of his own eponymous television series. This amazing vintage find looks to be from the 1960s, dating it back to the last decade that Howdy Doody originally aired. This delightful children's program ran from 1947 to 1960, and it was a major pioneer for children's entertainment, helping to set the stage for many future kid's television series.
Howdy Doody was hosted by the puppeteer, Robert Emil Schmidt, better known as Buffalo Bob Smith. Smith originally created the Howdy Doody character while working as a radio announcer at WNBC. For a while Howdy was just a voice on the radio, but then demand for a visual representation of the character came, after Smith appeared on the tv show, Puppet Playhouse. The Howdy Doody puppet was first designed by Frank Paris, but after some disagreements between Paris and Smith over who owned the rights to the character, a new puppet design was created by Disney animator Mel Shaw and his business partner Bob Allen. This new version of Howdy was then crafted and operated by Velma Wayne Dawson.
Howdy Doody was a major household name during the show's heyday. Toymakers and department stores jumped on the opportunity to merchandise the popular puppet, and a catalog from 1955 showcases just how marketable the character was, as it contained a full 24 pages of Howdy Doody merchandise. This vintage tee is one of the few pieces of Howdy Doody memorabilia still floating around, that was produced not long after the show's original air dates.
Fits like a modern unisex adult medium. There is a light spot on the front and discoloration on the back, see pics.
