This amazing vintage band tee is for the Brazilian death metal band Sepultura, and this t-shirt celebrates the group's Beneath the Remains Tour from 1989. The tour was launched to promote the band's third studio album of the same name. Beneath the Remains was one of Sepultura's most successful albums and it was released during their time with the iconic heavy metal record label Roadrunner Records. The album was produced by Scott Burns who had worked with other notable metal bands like Death and Obituary. Burns had to communicate with Sepultura using translators however, as the band members spoke limited English at the time.
1989 was the first year that the band started touring outside of their native country of Brazil. Their first live dates outside of the country were in Europe, as they supported the band Sodom on their Agent Orange Tour. They then played their first US show on Halloween with the Danish metal band, King Diamond. From there the group's popularity spread throughout North America, largely thanks to the video for their song "Inner Self", which was a favorite on MTV's Headbangers Ball.
By this point in time, Beneath the Remains had gained the acclaim to be considered a classic among thrash metal circles, and Sepultura chose to move to the US, more specifically Phoenix, Arizona. Their next album, Arise, was another hit, and it lead to them performing with notable groups like Slayer, Motorhead, White Zombie, Alice in Chains, and Type O Negative during the early 90s. Sepultura was even asked to open for Ozzy Osbourne during his No More Tears Tour.
