This amazing vintage sweatshirt is a 1983 original from the Powell Peralta skateboard company. George Powell and Stacy Peralta joined forces in the late 70s to create what would become one of the most influential skateboard companies of all time. Powell Peralta wasn't just known for their line of gear, but also for their sponsored team of professional skaters, known as the Bones Brigade, which featured some of the biggest names in the history of the sport. The Bones Brigade were the stars of the legendary skate video The Search for Animal Chin and they were also known to dominate skate competitions and regularly grace the pages of publications like Thrasher Magazine. This sweet double-sided sweatshirt features the logo for arguably their most famous member of the team, Tony Hawk.
While the Bones Brigade featured such icons as Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Tommy Guerro, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen, Kevin Harris, and Alan Gelfand, none of them managed to become a household name quite like Tony Hawk did. Hawk was a prodigal talent, who managed to become a professional skateboarder at only fourteen years old. His skills allowed him to be named the National Skateboard Association world champion for twelve consecutive years, and by the time he graduated high school in 1986, Hawk had earned enough money from skateboarding to buy his first home.
While Hawk had already cemented his notoriety in the skate world, he truly reached superstar status in 1999, when he became the first skateboarder to ever land a "900", a highly difficult trick which requires skaters to complete two-and-a-half mid-air rotations. After landing the trick, Hawk chose to retire from professional competitions, but he still stayed involved in the sport, and performed at the annual X Games until 2003. By that point, Hawk had truly become a pop culture icon. He's made various film and television appearances in everything from Jackass: The Movie to the animated Nickelodeon show Rocket Power, and many fans also fondly remember his successful line of video games: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
