This distressed, double sided tee honors the US Marine Corps. The front of the tee features the Marines insignia and motto, Semper Fi, which is Latin for "always faithful." The back of the tee features a graphic of the Marines hoisting the American flag at the Battle of Iwo Jima during WWII. This iconic image was taken by photographer Joe Rosenthal who won a Pulitzer Prize for the photo.
The Marine Corps are a part of the US Department of the Navy, although they operate separately from the Navy. The Marines are known for being selective and having an extremely rigorous recruit training compared to other divisions of the military. The Battle of Iwo Jima took place toward the end of the WWII on an island 700+ miles off the coast of Japan between the US Marines and the Imperial Army of Japan. It was an extremely deadly battle, resulting in the deaths of all but 200 out of 21,000 Japanese soldiers and 7,000 Marines. The goal was to use Iwo Jima as a Pacific base for US operations but it's strategic value was never realized. The Marine Corps War Memorial was built near Arlington Cemetery in Virginia and the statue is based off Rosenthal's iconic photograph.
