This unique, vintage tee commemorates the 5th Annual African Marketplace and Culture Faire in Los Angeles, California. The festival began in 1986, meaning this shirt is from the summer of 1990. The shirt features a graphic of an African marketplace and the dates and location for the five day event.
The African Marketplace and Culture Faire was purposefully modeled after marketplaces that could be found in Africa. Bamboo thatched stalls selling authentic African food and wares were erected in
Rancho Cienga Park. The marketplace and faire hosted storytellers, shamen, musicians, dancers, and folklorists whose art and performances could be traced back to the continent. The festival also made a point to celebrate influences from the African Diaspora, such as Afro-Caribbean music and dance. The festival aimed to bring together multiple aspects of Black and African identities and celebrate the contributions of the African Diaspora to LA culture. An estimated 150,000 locals and tourists attended the 1990 African Marketplace and Culture Faire, making it one of the most successful LA-sponsored festivals of the time.
Fits like a modern unisex adult large. Discoloration and fading throughout the shirt, see pics.
