This awesome tee advertises the cigarette rolling paper brand, Bambu. The front of the shirt features the brand's iconic logo of a well dressed man smoking a cigarette and holding a pack of Bambu papers. The back of the shirt features a graphic of a rolling paper booklet produced by the R. Abad Santonja factory in Alcoy, Spain. Santonja y Sobrinos, or Santonja and Nephews in English, were the manufacturers of Bambu papers starting in the early 20th century. Bambu claims to be one of the 1000 oldest companies in the world. The company claims that they began in Spain during the 16th century and that they got their start producing bible paper, but there are differing accounts about the brand's early history.
Bambu attributes their success to the natural approach they take to creating papers. The gum sealer they use on their product comes from a specific species of Acacia tree and there are no added chemicals. Bambu became a cultural phenomenon with the release of Cheech and Chong's Big Bambu album in 1972. The physical album looked like a large pack of rolling papers and every record actually contained a giant rolling paper. The brand was known for their advertisements until the 1980s when the "Just Say No" campaign put a stop to their ads. However, Bambu continued to be extremely popular and was mentioned in songs by The Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, and Method Man.
