The Hewitt was built by the Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries and it was first launched in 1974. The destroyer was named after Admiral H. Kent Hewitt, and it was a Spurance-class destoryer, the largest general purpose destroyers to ever be used by the United States. These ships were nicknamed the "Greyhounds of the fleet" because of their notable speed and versatility.
