He started playing guitar at the ripe age of 7 years old and dropped out of high school to play in Austin, Texas clubs. Vaughan played guitar on David Bowie's album Let's Dance and he reached mainstream success shortly after. He was the leading figure in the blues revival of the 1980s and musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, and Buddy Guy were some of his biggest influences.
Vaughan played in several bands before eventually creating the group Double Trouble, named after an Otis Rush song of the same name. The group went through several members until it was eventually Vaughan,Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton and, at this point, the group's name was officially changed to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. In Step was the band's fourth and most successful studio album. The most popular track off of the album was "Crossfire" and it was Vaughan's only #1 hit song. In Step peaked at #33 on the US Billboard 200 and was awarded the 1989 Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
