This was the first film to ever be released in the popular Indiana Jones film franchise, starring Harrison Ford. The movie had a lasting impact on pop culture, and many even consider it to be one of the greatest films ever made.

The movie was based on a story co-written by George Lucas, who originally wanted to name the titular character Indiana Smith. Lucas was initially inspired by pulp novel heroes like Buck Rogers and Zorro. He then chose to make the character an archaeologist, based on his own love of archeology.
