There was a lot of renewed interest surrounding hockey and the NHL in Southern California during the late 80s and early 90s, as it was during this period that the Kings welcomed the legendary Wayne Gretzky to the team. With Gretzky's help the Kings were able to secure their first regular season division title. They also reached their first ever Stanley Cup Finals in 1993, despite Gretzky being absent for the majority of season due to injuries.
