The Howling is based on a novel by Gary Brandner which follows a TV news anchor staying at a resort in the remote mountains, completely unaware she's surrounded by werewolves. The movie grossed $17.9 million thanks to director Joe Dante and producer Michael Finnell. This success would later get these two hired by Warner Bros to work on the iconic movie Gremlins.

The comedy aspect of  The Howling really kicked things up a notch for viewers, featuring numerous wolf references and tributes to other legendary horror films like The Wolf Man, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, and The Mad Monster. Whether it was naming their characters after the ones in these films or doing cameos, there were plenty of fun easter eggs throughout the movie.
