This sweet shirt was made to promote the 1990 to 1991 touring production of the musical Sarafina! Written by the South African playwright Mbongeni Ngema, the show centers around a group of students involved in the Soweto Riots of June 1976. The tour was produced by the Lincoln Center Theater and starred Leleti Khumalo in the title role. The production also ran during the same time that the show's film adaptation was in development. The movie debuted roughly a year after the tour had ended, and starred Whoopi Goldberg in the role of Mary.
