This dark blue sweater is from the 1940s and comes with a shawl style v-neck collar. This sweater was issued to a sailor of the United States Navy during World War II. The front has wool letters sewn onto it, specifically the letters BT and the number 44. Patches like this were once issued to midshipmen when they graduated from the Naval Academy, and the number at the center denotes the year they graduated, in this case 1944.

There's a good chance that the letters were designed to indicate the enlisted rate of the sailor that owned the sweater. The initials BT are used to refer to boilermen or boiler techs, who are tasked with maintaining and repairing a ship's steam-propulsion system. The US Navy has since done away with this enlisted occupation, which make this sweater an even more unique piece of vintage memorabilia.
