This amazing and super rare t-shirt is from the benefit concert at C.B.G.B.'s for the 1978 fire at St. Mark's Church In the Bowery. The 1978 fire threatened to permanently destroy the historic church which was the home of the Poetry Project. This benefit event included both legendary poets and punk artists. One original poster from the event listed the following artists as featured acts: Allen Ginsberg, Lou Reed, Tom Carey Band, The Erasers, John Giorno, John Ashbery, Peter Orlovsky, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Anne Waldman, The B Girls, Ted Berrigan, Rene Rieard, The Student Teachers, Andre Voznesensky, Nervus Rex, Ron Padgett, Rudies, Maureen Owen and Son.
C.B.G.B's was a legendary underground venue for hardcore punk, post punk, metal and alternative rock. The name C.B.G.B. was short for Country, Blue Grass, Blues and it was converted from a biker bar to a venue for music concerts by Hilly Kristal. Though his initial vision was for just Country, Blue Grass and Blues, Kristal's venue quickly turned into a popular place for punk and new wave concerts. The bar hosted some of the first concerts ever played by the Ramones.
The bar's evolution into a legendary punk venue began in the early 70s after the collapse of the Mercer Arts Center. Mercer refugees were welcomed at CBGB's, where acts were required to perform a majority of original songs. Over the years the club has hosted such iconic bands as Television, Patti Smith Group, Blondie, Talking Heads, The Damned, the Misfits, the Dead Boys, the Cramps, the Dictators, the Fleshtones, the B-52s, and Joan Jett and the Balckhearts.
