This amazing graphic tee remembers the Patti Smith Group's 1978 hit "Because the Night" from their album Easter. "Because the Night" was one of two singles off the album and it remains Smith's biggest hit to date. The song was actually co-written with Bruce Springsteen who came up with the idea for the song but struggled to get past a few notes and the title. Springsteen's sound engineer at the time was also working on Easter and he suggested that he give the song to Smith to record.
Easter was Patti Smith's third studio album and her first after she was injured on her Radio Ethiopia tour. During a show in Florida, Smith fell 15 feet from the stage and broke several bones in her neck, which required her to go through intensive physical therapy. Thankfully, she full recovered and was ready to rock again in no time.
Easter was the Patti Smith Group's mainstream breakthrough, thanks to the success of "Because the Night." Although Easter was a commercial success, many fans remember her debut album, Horses, as her most prolific work. Horses was a cultural touchstone for the 1970s New York City punk rock scene and it played a huge role in the formation of the genre. The album was even selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its cultural significance and many cite it as one of the greatest albums of all time.
In addition to her extensive and impressive discography, Patti Smith is a renowned poet, author, and artist. Her memoir Just Kids, which documents her relationship with fellow artist Robert Maplethorpe, won her a National Book Award in 2010. She's also had her own art exhibition of original paintings on display in the Andy Warhol Museum.
