This awesome shirt shows off Batman's most notorious adversary, the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker. When Batman was granted his own DC Comics series in 1940, the Joker was there for the very first issue. The character was actually set to be killed off after his first appearance, but a little editorial intervention spared the villain and allowed him to eventually develop into one of DC's most iconic criminals.
This shirt is copyright 1989, and the featured graphic appears to have been drawn by Brian Bollard, the artist responsible for one of the most infamous graphic novels in the Batman franchise, Batman: The Killing Joke. The highly acclaimed one-shot was written by Alan Moore, and it introduced a tragic origin story behind the Joker. Regarded as one of the greatest Batman stories ever published, the novel won the 1989 Eisner Award for "Best Graphic Album". It also had a long-lasting effect on the Batman series, as it included the paralysis of Barbara Gordon, an event that would eventually lead to the former Batgirl becoming Oracle.
