The Bell System was a system of telecommunication companies that were often called "Ma Belle", like Mother Bell, because of how they dominated telecommunication services in North America. They were led by the Bell Telephone Company, which was named after the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell. Later they came under control of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, better known as AT&T.
