This incredible tee features a satirical poster that was published by the Socialist Workers Party in the early 80s. The poster was printed in their weekly newspaper the Socialist Worker, and it depicted a parody of the famous Hollywood classic, Gone with the Wind. In this version, Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara are replaced by President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and it makes a jab at the close political relationship that the two conservative world leaders shared. The poster also mocks the looming threat of Nuclear War that the pair brought to the early 80s.
The graphic includes clever details, like references to other politicians that made an impact on the era such as Henry Kissinger, Edward Heath, and Milton Friedman. The made up tagline also humorously summarizes what many anti-nuclear activists feared might happen after Reagan and Thatcher took office, "She promised to follow him to the end of the earth. He promised to organise it!" The poster was made by Bob Light and John Houston during the months between when Reagan was elected and sworn into office. Although the image is humorous, it reflects the real fears that some people had surrounding Reagan's presidency and how it would affect foreign relations during the later phase of the Cold War.
