This vintage tee was specially made for the 1996 Arthur Ashe Kids Day in Queens, New York. The event kicks off every August to cultivate and promote inner city youth and their interest in tennis. At its core, AAKD honors tennis and civil rights icon Arthur Ashe.
The '96 Arthur Ashe Kids Day was sponsored by USTA and Aetna, and perfectly segued into the official start of the US Open. Over the years, numerous celebrities and athletes have participated in the event including the likes of Hanson, Backstreet Boys, Serena Williams, Anna Kournikova, Will Ferrell, Bradley Cooper, and Rihanna.
Arthur Ashe climbed the ranks of tennis starting from the segregated playgrounds of Richmond, Virginia all the way to a Wimbledon championship- making him the first black Wimbledon champion. He was also a talented writer, equal rights activist, and a spokesman for HIV/AIDS.
