This sweet shirt has an amazing big print graphic that takes up the entire front of the tee and pays tribute to the seminal jam band, The Grateful Dead. This shirt was made in the early 90s and it's credited to an artist known as Ellis DTees. The design features a skeletal parody of Uncle Sam, similar to the one featured in the 1977 Grateful Dead Movie.
Although not quite as famous as other symbols like the Steal Your Face Skull or the Dancing Bears, the Uncle Sam Skeleton still remains a notable piece of Dead iconography. It was featured during the Grateful Dead Movie's animated opening segment, which was designed by Gary Gutierrez, who would go on to direct the band's music video for "Touch of Grey". Another noteworthy appearance of the skeleton was featured on the poster for the concert video Dead Ahead, which showcased the band's performance at Radio City Music Hall in 1980.
Thanks to its inclusion in the movie, the Uncle Sam Skeleton is often associated with the Grateful Dead song "U.S. Blues" Both the song and the accompanying graphics turn typical symbols of American patriotism into free-spirited emblems of rock and roll.
