Darth Maul's screentime and dialog were both quite limited in Episode I, but that didn't stop fans from loving his unique design. George Lucas originally wanted the inspiration behind the characters to be "your worst nightmare". In the end, Darth Maul was modeled after "your second worst nightmare", only because Lucas decided that character designer, Lain McCaig's first draft was too frightening.
