The Rams earned this Super Bowl appearance by defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship game. The Rams then went on to face the Tennessee Titans, and they wound winning the nail biter of a bowl game.

The Rams took an early lead, scoring sixteen unanswered points during the first three quarters. However during the second half, the Titans managed to tie the game, marking the first time that a Super Bowl team ever erased a deficit of more than ten points. The Rams then regained the lead with a 73-yard touchdown, but their victory wasn't solidified until the nerve-wracking, final seconds of the game. The Titans were just one yard away from tying the game, when Mike Jones made the tackle that clinched the Rams' victory, and the play went down in history as "The Tackle".
