This amazing women's tee promotes the Patti Smith Group and their hit single "Because the Night" from their album Easter. One of two singles off her third studio album, "Because the Night" was Patti Smith's biggest hit to date. It was actually co-written with Bruce Springsteen who had recorded a rough version of the song with the E Street Band but was struggling to get further than some notes and the title. His engineer at the time was also producing Easter for Smith and he suggested that Springsteen give the rough draft of the song to her. Smith took Springsteen's draft and ran with it, adding her own lyrics, and scoring her biggest single ever.
Easter was the first album Smith released after she was injured on her Radio Ethiopia tour. During a show in Florida, Smith fell 15 feet from the stage into the orchestra pit and broke several vertebrae in her neck. After extensive physical therapy, Smith was back and ready to rock. Due to the success of "Because the Night," Easter was the Patti Smith Group's commercial breakthrough. The album peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and received rave reviews from critics who called it "transcendent."
Patti Smith is often called the "punk poet laureate" and her influence on the New York City punk rock scene during the 70s is unmatched. Her debut album, Horses, was particularly important in the development of the underground punk sound. Although the album was modestly successful in the mainstream, Horses became a keystone in the punk rock genre. Many consider it the first, true punk rock album and it heavily influenced all records that were to come after. Horses was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its significance and it is frequently named as one of the best recorded albums of all time.
In addition to being a renowned musician, Pattie Smith is a published poet and author with several books of original work. Her memoir Just Kids, which documents her relationship with fellow artist Robert Mapplethorpe, won the 2010 National Book Award for Nonfiction. Smith also had an art exhibition of her own, original paintings in the Andy Warhol Museum in 2003.
