This sweet ringer t-shirt promotes Bazooka Bubble Gum made the Topps Company, which was also famous for manufacturing baseball, football, and other sports and non-sports related trading cards. Bazooka bubble gum began being marketed to the public just after World War II, but in 1953 Topps changed the packaging and added a new element to help draw kids to the treat. The gum was unique for featuring a series of small comic strips in its packaging, and the strips detailed the adventures of a character named Bazooka Joe.
The strip and its character were created and initially drawn by the illustrator Wesley Morse, who also gained notoriety for designing another popular advertising mascot, the Copa girl, who was pictured on the Copacabana logo. From 1967 to 1990 the main writer for the comics was Jay Lynch who was a pioneering member of the underground comix movement with his magazine Bijou Funnies.
