This vintage find was made for the Cummings Valley Conservation Camp in Tehachapi, California. Also known as fire camps, conservation camps were established in California during the firefighter labor shortages of World War II. They are run by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and employ incarcerated inmates from local correctional facilities, who are then tasked with supporting first responders during fires, floods, and other emergencies. Participants are volunteers, and while the program has been criticized due to the low pay and dangerous working conditions, fire camps also offer inmates better living conditions and the opportunity to receive unique job training.
The tag says extra large but fits like a modern unisex adult large, small spots on the front, see pics
