This sweet double-sided t-shirt promotes the 1989 Batman film directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as the world's greatest detective. This was the first live action theatrical film to center around the DC comics hero since the 1960s, and it was both a critical and commercial success. This amazing shirt showcases the iconic villain of the movie, Batman's most notorious arch nemesis, the Joker, who was portrayed in the film by the Academy Award winning actor Jack Nicholson.
Batman was only Burton's third feature length film, and the project wasn't greenlit until the director proved his worth with the success of Beetlejuice, which also starred Keaton in the title role. Keaton's casting was actually quite controversial, and thousands of protest letters poured in from comic book fans who were concerned that they had cast an actor known primarily for his comedic roles, like Jack Butler in Mr. Mom. Meanwhile multiple talented character actors were considered for the role of the Joker, including Tim Curry, Brad Dourif, John Lithgow, and James Woods. Beloved comedian Robin Williams had lobbied hard for the part, but it ultimately went to Nicholson, who demanded a strict "off-the-clock" agreement that entitled him to have so many hours off from filming each day. Part of Nicholson's contract also specified that he'd have off for any Los Angeles Lakers home games. When asked about his role as the Joker, Nicholson was quoted saying that it was one of his favorites he ever played.
