Adidas is the second largest sportswear brand after Nike. The brand was founded by Adolf "Adi" Dassler and his brother Rudolph. The brand's first big break came when Dassler convinced Jesse Owens to wear his sneakers in the 1936 Olympics before he ultimately won four Olympic gold medals. Adi and his brother eventually went their separate ways. Rudolph went on to found Pumas sneakers and Dassler settled on the name Adidas for his brand. It's a popular misconception that Adidas is an acronym for "all day I dream about soccer." However, its actually derived from the founder's name; his nickname Adi combined with the first three letters of his last name.

Adidas acquired the rights to the three-stripe design in the 50s. Dassler purchased it from a failing Finnish sportswear brand called Karhu. He paid for it with the equivalent of 1,600 euros and two bottles of whiskey. When the brand introduced the trefoil design in the 70s, they wanted to keep these iconic stripes. The three leaves on the trefoil represent the three continents where Adidas products were available at the time: North America, Europe, and Asia. Adidas remains a popular brand for soccer and football players around the world, sponsoring teams like Real Madrid and Manchester United.
