It granted them a spot in Super Bowl XXVII, facing the Dallas Cowboys. The game was played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and it was the last Super Bowl to be played at a non-NFL stadium.

In the end the Cowboys defeated the Bills, and the team set a record the following year as the first NFL team to suffer four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Bills fans were disappointed, but this era was also one of the most exciting for the Bills, as the team was also the first to ever make four consecutive Super Bowl appearances.
