This awesome double-sided t-shirt pays tribute to one of the most beloved and twisted cartoons of the 1990s. The shirt promotes The Ren & Stimpy Show, one of three original Nicktoons to air on Nickelodeon when the channel first appeared in 1991. However unlike the channel's other two original shows, Rugrats and Doug, The Ren & Stimpy Show set itself apart by being packed with plenty of dark humor, sexual innuendo, violence, and gross out images. The show aired for five seasons from 1991 to 1995 on Nickelodeon, but show creator John Kricfalusi, who also provided the original voice for Ren, was actually dismissed from production in 1992.
There were a lot of contributing factors that lead to Kricfalusi's contract being terminated. Part of it was Nickelodeon taking issue with his racy humor, and Kricfalusi himself cites the controversial episode "Man's Best Friend" as the main reason for his dismissal. However, Nickelodeon also struggled to get the production company Spumco to deliver episodes on time, and Kricfalusi was accused of being irresponsibly lax about deadlines.
Regardless of the controversy surrounding the show's production, Ren & Stimpy was a classic staple of 90s animation. Fans will remember its outlandish characters including Muddy Mudskipper and Powdered Toast Man. They'll also remember the off-beat jokes like the "Happy Happy Joy Joy" song and the dreaded history eraser button from the "Space Madness" episode.
