This vintage football tee is a truly unique and interesting find as it represents an NFL team that never came to fruition, the St. Louis Stallions. In the early 90s, there were multiple attempts to try and get a professional football team for the city of St. Louis. Locals were eager to for a new franchise to take the place of the St. Louis Cardinals, who had been relocated to Phoenix, Arizona at the end of the 1987 NFL season.
When the NFL announced they were looking to add two new expansion teams for the 1994 season, St. Louis was one of the hopeful finalists looking to win the bid. The team would have been placed in Busch Stadium while construction began on what would eventually become The Dome at America's Center, but the city's dreams of a new team were dashed when the NFL announced that the bids for a new team had successfully gone to Charlotte, North Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida.
The Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars began prepping to start playing in 1995, while St. Louis continued its attempts. At one point there were plans to move the New England Patriots to St. Louis, after James Orthwein purchased the team from Victor Kiam, but these plans were ruined once Orthwein learned that he would be barred from relocating the team. Eventually the Los Angeles Rams were moved to St. Louis, but they later returned to Los Angles in 2015.
This shirt remains a unique keepsake from a team that almost was, and it also serves as a reminder of the optimistic attitude shared by the city of St. Louis, while they awaited the NFL's announcement of their new expansion teams.
