This road race was probably started by Phineas Taylor Barnum or dedicated to him. Many may recognize the last name "Barnum" as this is 1/2 of the iconic circus duo Barnum & Bailey Circus. A lesser known fact about Barnum was his politician side- PT Barnum was the mayor of Bridgeport, CT from 1875-1876 and served in the Connecticut House of Reps from 1866-1869.
