This dark blue sweater is from the 1940s and comes with a shawl style v-neck collar. This sweater was worn by United States Naval soldiers around World War II. The front has wool letters sewn onto it in honor of the 44th Construction Battalion also referred to as the Seabees. Before 1941 naval construction was carried out by private contractors, however after the events of Pearl Harbor the US Navy faced an increased demand for the defense and building of Naval Advance Bases. Thus the Seabees began training in 1942. The 44th Construction Battalion was trained at Camp Bradford in Virginia and then later taken to the island of Espiritu Santo in Vanautu to build a Naval Advance Base in 1943.
