During the 70s, motocross was a hot commodity, especially in areas like California, where Hang Ten's clothing was already popular within the local surf scene. It was during this era, that the American Motorcyclist Association launched their first ever AMA Motocross Championship series. During the series' inaugural year, several races were held in California, at venues such as Tahoe Recreation Park, Carnegie Cycle Park, Carlsbad Raceway, and Saddleback Park.
