In addition to the ASL alphabet, the tee reads "come, sign with me." ASL is just one of many types of sign languages, and it uses hand symbols to communicate instead of spoken word. ASL is mostly used by those in Deaf communities in the US and Canada, although different dialects and creoles of ASL are used in other countries in Africa and parts of Asia. The language originated at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, Connecticut in the 19th century although there's evidence of other sign languages being used by people for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
