This awesome tee features a portrait of rock and roll pioneer Ritchie Valens. Valens was the son of two Mexican immigrants of Yaqui indigenous ancestry, and he took an interest in music at an early age. Sadly, he was only 17 when he died in the same plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, but Valens still became a spearheading force of the Chicano rock movement. Remembered for hits like "La Bamba" and "Donna", he is widely considered to have been the first Latino rock musician to break into the mainstream.
This shirt is copyright 1987, which was the same year that the artist gained new attention thanks to a biographical film directed by Luis Valdez. The movie starred Lou Diamond Phillips as Valenz, and it was called La Bamba after the traditional Mexican folk song that Valenz transformed into a commercial hit in 1958.
