Despite a boycott by several Eastern Bloc countries, the LA Olympics set a new record with 140 participating National Olympic Committees. The games were also lauded for their financial success, as the city of LA saved considerable money by using a number of preexisting sports complexes.

For the first time since 1968, the United States topped the medal count with 83 gold and 174 in total. This total was considerably higher than any of the other nations, as Romania ranked second with 20 gold, and Germany ranked third with 17.
