This beloved annual foot race is named after its course, which begins adjacent to the San Francisco Bay and finishes at the Great Highway, near where breakers are known to crash against the Pacific coast. Bay to Breakers was first established all the way back in 1912, and it was originally created to lift the morale of the city in the wake of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
