This t-shirt is from the South African musical Sarafina! by Mbongeni Ngema. The musical depicts students involved in the Soweto Riots in opposition to apartheid in 1976. The show premiered at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1987 and was presented by the Committed Artists. This shirt is from the 1987 Committed Artists production of the show at the Lincoln Center Theater directed by Gregory Mosher featuring actress Leleti Khumalo as the titular character. The show was later adapted into a 1992 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Leleti Khumalo.
