This awesome band tee is for the Monkees for their 20th Anniversary World Tour, which also featured Gary Puckett & the Union Gap, Herman's Hermits, and The Grass Roots. The Monkees were originally formed for the premise of a sitcom titled The Monkees which aired on NBC for two seasons. The show starred Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Davy Jones as the eponymous band, and Dolenz described the premise of the show as being about "an imaginary band that wanted to be the Beatles but was never successful". Ironically the popularity of the show led to the Monkees being one of the most successful bands of the 1960s.
The show was canceled in 1968 although the group continued to record music until 1971. When an interest in a revival of the show sprang up in 1986, a series of new records and reunion tours was launched, including the tour featured on this shirt which included Jones, Dolenz, and Tork, who are all pictured on the front riding in a pink convertible.
Fans of the Monkees will remember their popular hits such as "Last Train to Clarksville", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Daydream Believer" and possibly their most famous song "I'm a Believer", which was covered by Smash Mouth for the soundtrack for the animated film Shrek.
